Second to file for Position 1

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Mae HustonWhen members of the Jefferson County Republican Party were searching for a fiscal conservative to run for the position held by retiring County Commissioner John Hatfield, some asked Mae Huston to run.

Huston, who is passionate about citizens being involved in government, thought about it and decided to run.

"Attending Jefferson County Commission meetings has given me an appreciation for the fine quality of individuals currently serving Jefferson County, including the commissioners, the staff and the department heads," said Huston, noting that she appreciates the sense of teamwork. "I would like to be part of the continuing good that is being done and work for building a strong future."

Currently employed as a customer service professional for H&R Block, Huston has also worked locally at Earth2O, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Born in Wisconsin, she and her family moved to Gresham when she was a small child. After graduating from Gresham High School, she attended North Park University in Chicago for two years, studying social science and music, and then returned to Oregon, where she married Stan Huston, and raised two daughters.

Their older daughter lives in Okinawa, Japan, where she serves in the U.S. Navy, and their younger daughter lives in Culver, and works as a massage therapist in Madras.

In Multnomah County, Huston worked as the administrative secretary for the Rockwood Water Public Utility District Board of Directors for 11 years, and eventually ran for a position on the board. Although she wasn't elected, she said, "it was a valuable learning experience."

Earlier, Huston had volunteered on the campaign of a friend who ran for the Oregon Legislature. When he was elected, she volunteered in his state representative office for one session, which she found "wonderfully educational."

"The experience in Salem gave me a strong feeling that the more citizens who are involved in government, the better government we will have," she said.

The Hustons purchased their home in Culver in 1998, and moved to Culver in 2005. In 2006, she participated in the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Class.

"Being a participant in the Jefferson County Ford Family Foundation Leadership Class in 2006 gave me a broader view of and appreciation for all the communities in our county," she said.

Huston has served on the boards for the Madras Area Community Action Team and the Culver Urban Renewal District, is active in the Jefferson County Republican Party, for which she is currently the vice chairman, and is a member of the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and the Juniper Branch of Family Finders. She is also an active member of the Culver Christian Church.

For years, she has been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and has served in several offices on the state board. "Because I had ancestors who personally sacrificed for the cause of America's independence, I tend to take it personally when people exercise their right to criticize our government, but do not assume their civic responsibility to register to vote and regularly vote in elections."

Huston said that she appreciates the commission's fiscally conservative nature, "and I’d like to see that continue. I’m interested in the county government serving all of the county. I like my community and I love my country and I want it to be a good place for people to live."

"I don't have an axe to grind, I just want to serve," she said.

Election May 20

So far, Huston is the second to file for Position 1 on the commission. Tom Brown has also filed.

Mike Ahern has refiled for Position 2, and will be challenged by Floyd Paye, who has also filed.

Candidates have until March 11 to file for the two open positions on the three-member commission.

Other positions on the May 20 ballot will include sheriff, for which Sheriff Jim Adkins has refiled, and clerk, for which incumbent clerk Kathy Marston has filed.
