County ponders marijuana moratorium

Allowed under state bill

Next week, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners will consider a one-year moratorium on medical marijuana facilities for the county, as allowed by the state.

"The State Legislature passed a bill that gives cities and counties the ability to put a one-year moratorium on marijuana dispensaries, from a land-use perspective," said County Administrator Jeff Rasmussen.

The county commissioners discussed the moratorium at their last meeting March 26, and decided to hold a public hearing on Wednesday, April 9, at 9:30 a.m., in the commissioners' meeting room in the courthouse annex.

After the public hearing, the commission could vote to approve the moratorium. "It could pass if the vote's unanimous," he said. "If it's not unanimous, it will go to a second reading."

Under state law, counties and cities must pass an ordinance by May 1 in order to halt facilities for the next year.
