New writer on job for Crooked River Ranch

Local news reporter

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Stephanie RoderickThe new Crooked River Ranch correspondent for the Pioneer, Stephanie Roderick, 42, moved to the Ranch nearly two years ago, and is still getting to know people.

"I love the Ranch; it’s beautiful out here," said Roderick, who reopened the "Snack Shack" as "Cowboy Kitchen" this week. "I’m definitely looking forward to meeting people; I love to get know everyone on a first-name basis and learn more about them."

Born in Las Vegas, Nev., on the Nellis Air Force Base, Roderick moved to Oregon with her family and attended school in Gresham, where she graduated from high school in 1990. After high school, she attended Mount Hood Community College, where she studied criminal justice and communication.

Besides working in a café and interning in the Portland Public Defender's Office, Roderick worked for the St. Johns Review in the late 1990s. She wrote stories, took photos, helped put the bi-weekly newspaper together and even delivered it.

In 2004, she opened her own café in Sandy, called Shorty's Corner Café, which closed in 2008. In 2009, she opened a second café in Sandy — Stephanie's Café.

After her husband, Bob, retired from his position as maintenance engineer at Emanuel Legacy, the Rodericks moved to Crooked River Ranch in August 2012, and both went to work at Summit Assisted Living in Bend, where Bob Roderick is the maintenance manager. Stephanie Roderick was the dietary and activities manager until April 11, when she quit to open the café at Crooked River Ranch.

"My impression is that it’s a pretty tight-knit group out here," said Roderick. "Having a community that’s close is a positive thing as long as everyone can grow together."

Roderick has a daughter, Samantha, 19, who lives in Sandy. She enjoys collecting rocks, taking road trips, spending time with family, and writing stories.
