OSP PHOTO - The fatal accident was in a snowy area of the highway, near the Highway 35 turn off.Two people died Christmas Day in a two-vehicle crash, which closed U.S. Highway 26 for 10 hours.

According to the Oregon State Police report, on Monday, Dec. 25 at 3:25 p.m., OSP troopers from Portland and The Dalles responded to the report of a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 26, near milepost 65 in Wasco County. The location was just east of the intersection of Highway 35. A preliminary investigation revealed that a white 2008 Nissan Versa was eastbound when it lost traction and crossed into the westbound lane into the path of an oncoming 2018 Subaru Outback.

The Versa was struck at an angle in the passenger's side doors. The driver of the Versa was identified as 48-year-old Deirdre Lynne Mackey from Lake Oswego. The right front passenger of the Versa was identified as her 12-year-old daughter. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Subaru was identified as Darrow Geordan Rupp, 41, and his passenger Maria Suzanne Veltman, 39, both from Portland. Rupp and Veltman were transported to Legacy Emanuel for nonlife threatening injuries. Highway 26 was completely closed, or limited to one lane of travel, while the crash was being investigated for just over 10 hours before being reopened.

Driving too fast for the conditions is being considered a factor in the crash. The investigation is continuing. OSP was assisted by Oregon Department of Transportation and the Hoodland Fire Department.
