No details are being released on administrative action involving Joe McHaney.

HOLLY M. GILL - Joe McHaney, the executive director of the Madras Aquatic Center and the Kids Club, has been placed on administrative leave. Neither board of directors, nor their attorneys are commenting. The executive director of the Madras Aquatic Center and Kids Club, Joe McHaney, was placed on paid administrative leave last week.

According to Jinnell Lewis, the chairman of the MAC Board of Directors, and Tim Gassner, the chairman of the Kids Club Board of Directors, McHaney was put on leave April 12, for an undisclosed reason.

McHaney was hired four years ago as the MAC's director, and started work on April 17, 2014. Previously, he had served as the Kids Club director since August 2012, but by the end of 2014, he oversaw both organizations under a memorandum of understanding.

In 2017, the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce awarded McHaney as the Outstanding Director of the Year for his work improving the financial standing of the MAC.

Contacted on Friday, Lewis commented, "We're all collaboratively working together — the board, as well as Gregg Markwardt, the recreation director, and Tim Nelson, the aquatics director, to keep operations running as smoothly as they have been."

During McHaney's tenure as executive director, the Madras Aquatic Center Recreation District programs have expanded, particularly out-of-pool youth recreation programs. In November 2017, the district renewed its five-year operations levy. For the 2017-18 fiscal year, the district has an operating budget of $1,240,578.

On Monday, the Kids Club's operations director, Caren Pilkington, and board president, Tim Gassner, issued a statement by email to members and families stating, "We regret that we don't have additional information at this time, however, we want to tell you that Kids Club will continue to operate with all normal functions. We can assure you that there was no threat to the health and safety of our members."

Contacted separately, Gassner said that the board placed McHaney on administrative leave based on the MAC's action. Pilkington remains in charge at the Kids Club.

In an email, Jeremy Green, who represents the MACRD, said, "At this time, I am unable to provide you any information concerning Mr. McHaney's administrative leave."

McHaney's official response was, "No comment per legal advice."
