Relay dinner invites community

Catered by Black Bear

Relay For Life's 24 hours of fundraising events for cancer research kicks off with the Survivors Lap at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at the new location — the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

Ongoing events include music by Court Priday, Rachel Andrews, Rachelle Cooke, and the Brewer Family, a chicken lunch by Madras Kiwanis, Duct Tape Contest, silent auction, tri-tip dinner, and a luminaria ceremony. (See full schedule on page 8.)

Community dinner

The whole community is invited to the tri-tip dinner during Jefferson County Relay For Life events from 5-7 p.m., July 13, at the fairgrounds.

The dinner, featuring tri-tip beef, baked beans, cole slaw, and potato salad, is being catered by Black Bear Diner, and owner Joe Davis is donating the food.

Offered as a fundraiser for Relay, the dinner costs $8 per person, and Jefferson County Rotary members have volunteered to take tickets and help serve. Some 400 meals are being prepared for the dinner, which raises money for cancer research.

Davis said he offered to donate the meal, “Because it’s an important thing for our community. Everybody knows someone, or has lost someone to cancer. My wife, Nancy, just went through a bout with cancer.”

“I can’t be a volunteer or be on committees, but I can sure donate the food and help make the event a success,” he explained, adding, “My wife feels the same way because of all the support offered to her during the six months she went through it.”

“But this is about what we all do for our community, and the folks who volunteer all year long,” Davis said, noting he hopes the dinner has a good turnout.
