Esther OlsonEsther Olson

December 21, 1918 – July 23, 2013

Madras resident Esther Olson passed away at her home on July 23, 2013, at the age of 94.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1918, the sixth child of Frank Olson and Ida M. (Lundin) Olson. Both her parents were immigrants from Sweden who came to the U.S. around 1905. Esther had four sisters and two brothers, all of whom preceded her in death.

Esther attended schools in Wolf Point, Mont., graduating from high school in 1936. After completing a course at a business school in Minneapolis, Minn., she was employed for many years as a stenographer for Consolidated Freightlines.

Around 1947, she began training for overseas missionary work at a religious college in Tacoma, Wash. Upon completing her training, in 1950 she was posted to India as a missionary for the Assemblies of God.

From 1950 until her retirement in 1984, she was in charge of The Door of Hope Orphanage in Purulia, West Bengal, India. During her years at the orphanage, she took in, cared for and raised more than 50 orphans or children whose parents were unable to care for them. Many of them were under her care from infancy through adulthood and remained close, keeping in touch with her until the end of her life.

After retiring in 1984, Esther moved to Madras, to be near her sister, Inez Morrow. During retirement she was active in her church, the Living Hope Christian Center, and worked as a volunteer for many years at the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. She was also a longtime member of the Methodist women’s Tuesday morning Bible study group and regularly attended lunches and events at the Jefferson County Senior Center in Madras.

Esther enjoyed playing the piano and occasionally played for her church or at the senior center. As a young woman, she also played the violin and sang. She was an avid Scrabble player and frequently joined a Saturday morning Scrabble group at a coffee shop.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Oregon, California and Idaho, and by her many adopted daughters in India and their families.

There will be a service at Living Hope Christian Center Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to Calcutta Mercy Ministries, 101 North Eighth St., P.O. Box S, Griffin, GA 30224, which provides medical care to the poor of Calcutta.
