The historical society's walking tour last Saturday was a success, with 60 people showing up to tour historic Madras buildings. The Jefferson County Historical Society’s Annual Meeting and Ice Cream Social will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, beginning at 1:30 p.m., in the Madras Senior Center at 860 S.W. Madison St. The event is free and open to everybody — historical society members, family, friends, lovers of local history.

After election of this year’s slate of returning and new JCHS director-candidates and brief reports on the society’s finances and current doings and plans, the program will feature a presentation by Madras High School student Carly Breach.

In 2012, Carly won the historical society prize for best project and exhibit in the annual Jefferson County Middle School History Day competition, with an entry on notable Oregon shipwrecks.

This past year, her research on the tragic New York City “Triangle Shirtwaist Factory” fire won her first place honors in the Oregon statewide History Day Competition, and she went on to compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C., in June 2013. She will talk about her historical research experiences, and what she’s learned along the way.

And as always, the event will offer old-time ice cream sundaes for everybody, with a variety of delicious toppings, along with the opportunity to visit and catch up on what’s been happening.

As a special attraction this year, members of the Madras High Class of 1963, the 50th Madras graduating class (in town for their 50th class reunion) have been invited to come.
