Art murals liven JCMS halls

JCMS Art Club students who helped create hall murals included Jared Holliday, left, Celeste White, Ally Dominiak, Michell Galan, Raymond Sam-Smith, and Antonio Sanchez.Five new student-created murals are now decorating the hallways of Jefferson County Middle School, thanks to a grant from the Jefferson County Cultural Coalition.

Teacher Gena Bennett, who advises the afterschool JCMS Art Club said since there is no funding for afterschool clubs, she applied for a cultural coalition grant and used the money to purchase art supplies for the students.

The murals were actually created by last year’s eighth- and seventh-graders, along with some students in Lindsay Painter’s leadership class. They were hung over the summer, and revealed to the student body when school started last week.

Four different art mediums were used for the permanent art displays including an abstract crayon on canvass mural, a pastel tilework sign reading “JCMS” in the school’s entryway, a large photo display of the “ABC’s of Jefferson County,” a textured photo collage with pictures from different student cultures, and an abstract puzzle piece mural.

For the puzzle mural, a large piece of wood was cut into puzzle shapes, then each student painted a piece, without knowing what the others were painting. They selected five colors beforehand for everyone to use. The shapes were then reassembled, and produced a very colorful, creative and fun result.

“The object was to put artwork in some of our empty hallways,” Bennett said.
