by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Janet Narum has led several successful programs.Janet Narum has been selected as the new director of corrections education at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution. 

Previously, Narum was a training development specialist for the Oregon Department of Corrections, a director of education programs at Blue Mountain Community College- Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, and an instructor at Walla Walla Community College for the Washington State Penitentiary, a maximum-security prison. 

In addition, she served as the executive director of the Success Transition and Reentry Project in Washington State, and helped released offenders find employment.

Her accomplishments include editing and publishing in the “Convict Cookbook: A Charity Project” in 2003, which was written by the convicts at the Washington State Penitentiary. 

The book sold over 4,000 copies and received national attention on Good Morning America, CNN, NPR, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Martha Stewart Newsletter, and USA Today. 

She was also chosen as instructor of the year in 2002 by 35 faculty peers at Walla Walla Community College, Correctional Campus.

Narum, who is moving to Madras and began leading the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution education team on Nov. 15. 

DRCI is a minimum-security institution which currently has over 760 inmates.  Through a contract with the Department of Corrections, Central Oregon Community College provides programs in Adult Basic Education, General Equivalence Diploma completion, and welding. 

In addition, the Small Business Development Center, through a grant from the Partnership to End Poverty, offers a Prison Entrepreneurship Program.

The hiring committee included: Tucker Bauman, DRCI welding director/Interim education director; Jeff Boyer, Department of Corrections correctional rehabilitation manager; Debbie Hagan, director of secondary programs; Angelina Ptomey, ABS instructor; Lani Sykes, administrative assistant; and Courtney Snead, COCC Madras campus administrator.
