MHS Drama Club to perform murder mystery

by: SUSAN MATHENY/MADRAS PIONEER - Vanessa Aguirre (as Delores), far left, interrogates fellow 'actors' played by Joes Villarreal, second from left, Meriah Kelsay, Mikaela Brown, Zelylah Hasel, Elizabeth Wiernert, Idalis Ibrahim, and Jason McGee.The Madras High School Drama Club will present the murder mystery comedy “Acting Can Be Murder,” at 7 p.m., Feb. 22, and 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 23, at the MHS cafetorium.

Tickets will be available at the door at $5 for adults, and $3 for students.

The script, by Eddie McPherson, is a play within a play. It begins at the dress rehearsal of a local community theater’s murder mystery production.

The lead in that play, Delores Gordon, decides she has been an understudy for the last time. She takes matters into her own hands and bumps off the lead actress so she can finally land her dream roll.

But, Delores grows more and more worried when she suspects the cast is putting the pieces together as they move through their dress rehearsal.

The murderer reveals herself in the opening lines of the play, and has actually hidden the body inside the chest used as a coffee table right in the middle of their own set.

For the rest of the play, the audience watches as Delores slowly goes crazy with her own guilt, especially after she notices the chest is empty.

Directed by Scott Waite, the cast includes: Vanessa Aguirre (as Delores Gordon), Howard Weaver (as antique shop owner Jason McGee), Allison Forman (as Beverly Gladstone), Amanda Davis (as Janet Duncan), Elizabeth Wienert (as aristocrat Georgia Styles), Wilson Wells (as handyman Lloyd Fischer), Elizabeth Walton (as victim Guinevere Black), Zelylah Hasel as (Isabella Watts), Idalis Ibrahim (as Olivia Anderson), Mikaela Brown, (as Alice Oldacre), Meriah Kelsay (as doctor Oscar Fairfax), Jeremy Stinson (as police officer Evan Biddle), Jose Villarreal (as the arrogant Geoffrey Chance), and Hannah DeChamplain (as eager actor Albert Fisk).

Brittany Alperstein painted two portraits and did set painting for the production.
