Local quilters and other artists are again being invited to participate in a community read exhibit.

Bob Welch, award-winning columnist, is the featured author for the 11th Annual Jefferson County Community Read, with the author’s visit April 5, at the Rodriguez Annex of the library.

The 2014 book selection is “American Nightingale: The Story of Frances Slanger, Forgotten Heroine of Normandy,” by Welch.

The book is about a heroic World War II nurse and her trials of becoming a nurse, as well as the story of her experiences after landing at Normandy.

Quilters and artists are invited to find inspiration in the chosen book and create an art display to share with local communities. All quilts are welcome, and any size, design or style of artwork.

The commitment date for quilts and artwork is March 1, and items will need to be delivered to Art Adventure Gallery in Madras the week of March 24-28. April is the month for the All-Jefferson County Exhibit at the gallery, and the quilts and art will be displayed during the month of April, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 3.

Copies of “American Nightingale” are on sale for $10 at Art Adventure Gallery, Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, St. Charles Hospital Gift Shop, and the Jefferson County Library, which also has books available for checkout.

“American Nightingale” was featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award.

It was Welch’s book about Slanger that convinced legislators to honor the Boston nurse. Welch was asked to be the keynote speaker at a dedication ceremony at the Massachusetts Statehouse for a plaque honoring World War II nurse Frances Slanger.

Community Read sponsors include the Adele Rodriguez Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, Jefferson County Library District, and Mountain Photo and Graphics. For more information, contact the library at 541-475-3351.
