JCLD youth services

The Jefferson County Library Community Band traveled to Salem on April 18 to perform at the Oregon Library Association’s annual conference.

Librarians from around the state had a chance to learn about and to listen to the unique community band, which is organized through the Jefferson County Library.

Lorene Forman, library district youth services specialist and Library Community Band coordinator, shared a slide show presentation about the band. Then the Library Community Band, led by conductor Joe Baumann, performed six well-practiced, toe-tapping songs for the assembled librarians. The music was enthusiastically received.

Those performing at the event included Baumann, conducting and playing trombone, Jose Villarreal on baritone saxophone, Star Todd on trumpet, Greggory Vineyard on snare drum, Sally Schaefer on bells, Maya Kellsay on clarinet, April Forman on oboe, and Zelylah Hasel on Flute. Allison Forman assisted with hauling equipment and setting up.

Unfortunately, some of the regular players in the Library Community Band had to work that day and were unable to attend. Sadly, talented and dedicated library band percussionist Gary Stetter, who had planned to travel to Salem with the group, passed away just weeks before the event. He was fondly remembered in the slide show presentation.

After a well received performance, the Library Community Band headed to Silver Falls for a hike in the state park.

Library Community Band conductor, Baumann, has recently returned to his home state of Minnesota. As a dedicated Ethos music teacher at Metolius Elementary, a member of the music group Truir Amadan, and the talented conductor of the Library Community Band, Baumannn brought many musical gifts to Jefferson County and will be greatly missed.

Ethos teachers, Meaghan Russell and Sally Schaefer will continue playing in the Library Community Band. Russell now serves as the Library Community Band conductor.

Be sure to come hear Ethos music teachers Meaghan Russell, Sally Schaefer and Amanda Wyatt perform together at the Madras Saturday Market, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Library Community Band will be performing at the Fourth of July parade and celebration and in the Jefferson County Fair Parade.

Library Community Band practices are held on each Monday at the JCLD Rodriguez Annex (unless otherwise posted) from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and community members are invited to join.
