Jessica Dawes, 18, of Cornerstone Baptist Church, recently received Awana Club's highest award, the Citation Award.

It was presented May 28, by Awana instructors Larry Hyder, Gordon Nicholson and Dave Colburn.

Awana is an international evangelical Christian nonprofit organization founded in 1950. The mission of Awana is to help "reach kids, equip leaders and change the world for God."

The acronym is derived from the first letters of "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed," as taken from 2 Timothy 2:15.

The Citation Award is only given to high school seniors or adults, who have completed 10 years' worth of Awana curriculum, from third through 12th grades, including all associated activities.

Some of the work that was required for Dawes to earn the award included memorizing a total of 570 verses from the Bible.

Also, the award translates into scholarships offered at 40 colleges across the U.S., worth up to $12,000.
