Opportunity squandered

Stopped penalty kicked leads to 1-1 draw for MHS girls soccer

by: BILLY GATES/THE PIONEER - Madras defender Cassidy Brown tries to slide tackle the ball away from a North Marion midfielder in the Buffs' 1-1 tie with the Huskies on Thursday at Madras High School. If it wasn't for a penalty kick being stopped by the North Marion goalkeeper, Madras would have picked up their first win of the season. So far this season, the Buffs haven't won a match, but have earned ties in five of their seven matches. The Madras High School girls soccer team had a lead slip away Thursday against North Marion, and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in Madras.

Fifteen minutes after Madras' Mariah Stacona gave the Buffs the lead, North Marion ended up putting the ball in the net following a second cross of a corner kick to tie the game.

Madras missed a golden opportunity to win the match, however. After Madras forward Kalan Wolfe was pulled down inside the 18-yard penalty area, Stacona stepped up to take the penalty kick.

Stacona drilled a shot hard and high, but it went right to the North Marion goalkeeper, and she easily batted the shot away.

"We just had a bit of a letdown in the second half," Madras head coach Mike Osborne said. "This was a pretty evenly matched game, and a lot of the possessions were 50-50, but we overplayed certain spots and we're inexperienced."

Both teams played in the middle of the field for the majority of the first half, but there were a couple chances for goals. Stacona cracked a shot from about 20 yards out that sailed wide left of the target in the 15th minute, and then North Marion had a long shot hit the crossbar in the 20th minute. Aside from those, the first half was pretty uneventful when it came to scoring chances.

After a small build-up with passing by Madras, Stacona caught the North Marion goalkeeper off her line, and lofted a high-arcing shot that sailed over the keeper's head and into the net.

Stacona's chance to give the Buffs the lead back, and perhaps their first win of the season, came in the 68th minute, but the PK was turned aside.

With nine minutes left in the match, Madras' Alicia Farias had the Buffs’ last real scoring chance with a shot from about 25 yards out, which the North Marion goalkeeper picked up without issue.

The tie sent the Buffs to 0-1-2 in Tri-Valley Conference play, and 0-2-5 overall.

On Sept. 24, the Buffs lost to defending state champions Gladstone 6-1.

The result of Tuesday’s match against La Salle was not available by the Pioneer’s press deadline. The Buffs will be at home Thursday against Molalla.
