Oppenlander, Dupont pick up golds

Ian Oppenlander and Jarred Dupont earned tournament titles for the Madras High School wrestling team at the Culver Invitational, which concluded Saturday at Culver High School.

Oppenlander ripped through the field at 106 pounds, winning every match by fall. His quickest pin of the tournament came in the quarterfinals, which is where he pinned Corbett’s Chase Conner in 27 seconds.

Oppenlander won the final bout against La Pine’s David Kerr with a pin at the 1:21 mark of the first round.

Dupont, the state’s No. 1 ranked wrestler at 120 pounds in 4A — according to the Rockwell Rankings on the Oregon Wrestling Forum — won the 132-pound class with a pair of falls and two decisions.

Dupont beat Lowell’s Tommy Harvey with a 9-4 decision, and pinned Culver’s Jon Krueger in the second round in the semifinals. Dupont also turned in a quick pin, getting rid of Culver’s Ian Stevens in 57 seconds in the first round of his first bout.

After the two champs, Madras didn’t have a wrestler place higher than fifth. Heavyweight Miguel Sevilla finished 3-2 and placed fifth after he pinned La Pine’s Aden Willard-Komm in 57 seconds to end the fifth-place bout. Sevilla won twice before being put into the consolation bracket by Waldport’s Jason Moore in the semifinals.

In the quarters, Sevilla pinned Crook County’s Ian Godat in 18 seconds, which tied with Ridgeview’s Boomer Fleming for the fastest pin in the tournament.

Hayden Manu placed sixth in the 220-pound class. He picked up a win with a 40-second pin of Ridgeview’s Damian Garcia before dropping into the consolaton bracket.

In the consolation rounds, Manu won two more wins before dropping matches to Ridgeview’s Phelan Lund and Culver’s Jordan Henson.

Bryce Vincent finished sixth in the 126-pound class to round out the place-winners for the Buffs. The Buffs finished in eighth place with 98 points.

Next up for the Buffs is the Adrian Irwin Invitational, which begins at 4 p.m. Friday, at Ridgeview High School in Redmond. Competition will run all afternoon and evening Friday, and then until the champions are crowned on Saturday afternoon.
