by: JEFF WILSON/THE PIONEER - Madras' Lorena Alonso rips a shot during a match last week against North Marion.Dave Jordan's goal has always been to have some of his tennis players advance past the Tri-Valley Conference district tournament. He may have found the right pairing to do just that.

Seniors Wendy Galan and Lorena Alonso, the White Buffalos' No. 1 doubles team, have upped their game as of late and cruised to three wins last week, not even dropping a set in wins over teams from Cascade, North Marion and Blanchet Catholic.

"They are good doubles players," Jordan, the Buffs' coach, said. "They like to hit hard and put the ball away."

The pair started the season as the No. 2 doubles team, but have worked their way to the top spot, one they aren't going to give away very easily.

Jordan said he knew his doubles play would be a strong point this year, but wasn't sure who would play with whom or how they would be ordered. Galan and Alonso took care of that for him.

"We've just been practicing, and focusing," Galan said.

A lot of that practice has gone to serving, something that Galan has been doing well. Against North Marion, she ripped first serve after first serve deep and hard, making the points easier to win.

But more than that, the duo work well together, Jordan said.

"They don't get down on each other," he said. "They can laugh off bad points and just try to do better the next time. They still aren't perfect but I'm liking the way they are playing."

And that goes for the entire team. Madras won all three of its matches last week and is working its way into position to make some noise at the district tournament next month.

With no state qualifiers last year, Jordan sees some possibilities this season.

That includes Itzel Romero, who won twice at No. 1 singles during the week and Jessica Gonzalez, who added three wins at No. 3 singles.

The Buffs play host to the Madras Invitational Saturday.

MHS boys struggle

The Madras boys tennis team had a rough go last week, dropping three Tri-Valley Conference matches.

The Buffs lost to Cascade and North Marion 8-0 and closed out the week with a 4-1 loss to Blanchet Catholic.

Oved Felix and Joseph Calica pick up the long win for Madras at No. 1 doubles against Blanchet.

The Buff hit the courts this week for matches against Central and Santiam.
