Madras soccer teams fight their way to finals
As Madras continues to build its reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the soccer field, three area teams held their own in the Broken Top 3v3 Shootout in Bend June 10 and earned some hardware in the process.
Hosted by the Bend FC Timbers at Big Sky Park, the three-on-three tournament featured 18 divisions among boys, girls and coed teams. Games were played across 14 fields in the park. The field dimensions were 25 yards wide by 35 yards long and the goals were also smaller than a typical 11-on-11 match
In the U-18 boys division, Madras MPC ended the day as champions after defeating Summit Tropic Thunder in the finals match.
The team consisted of Andres Acuna, Alex Arana, Alex Diaz, Esteban Gomez, Melchor Olivera and Jonathan Reynoso. Five of the six were members of the 2016 Madras High varsity squad that advanced to its first state championship game in program history. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, all of them will return for the 2017 season.
The Bayern Madras team of Steve Gonzales, Eben Tapia, Eli Boyle, Jesus Gutierrez, Jacob Turo and Osvaldo Castaneda put together a run to the U-11 boys division finals, before they lost to Vashon Arsenal.
Also represented locally was the Madras FC team of Leo Gutierrez, Yahir Aguirre, Daniel Zamora, Gerardo Patino, Ethan Tapia and Ulysses Ruiz.
