A standout senior campaign earned Madras softball senior Melissa Field a place on The Oregonian/OregonLive's 4A all-state softball team.
On a White Buffalo team with six seniors making up half of the 12-player roster, Field was a consistent force above the rest.
A flexible offensive option, the senior moved between the second and cleanup spot in the order as a dependable hitter and base-runner.
She also possessed a knack for chasing down fly balls in centerfield, even robbing a couple batters of extra base hits or home runs during the 2017 season.
The Buffs finished the season with an 11-13 record, including a mark of 6-9 in the Tri-Valley Conference to place fourth.
Class 4A Henley, which defeated Crook County 8-6 in the state championship game to complete a perfect 30-0 season, claimed many of the top honors, with catcher McKenna Armantrout winning player of the year, Lily Poe honored as pitcher of the year, and Bobby Mick as coach of the year.
