Madras girls tennis grabs 5-3 win at home
Three of four Madras doubles pairings won their matches and another two players on the singles courts followed suit, giving the Lady Buffs their first win of the season, a 5-3 victory over Mountain View on their home court.
On the singles side, Iylin Estrada grabbed a win in the No. 2 spot over Liliana Overcash in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 4 spot, Daniela Rodriguez also won in straight sets, getting the better of Nikole Hu in the same, 6-1, 6-2 score line.
The Lady Buffs owned the doubles court, only dropping one match.
The Buffs' No. 1 doubles team of Jessica and Olivera dropped their opening set to Moruya Harvey and Maria Larreneta by a 4-6 margin, but came back to win each of the next two, 6-1, 6-3.
On court No. 3, Margarita Castellanos and Kori Johnson were near-perfect against Raegan Horn and Lily Roach, winning both sets 6-0, 6-0.
The Buffs also claimed a win at No. 4, with Natalie Uribe and Chloe Smith taking care of Sophie Sears and Ashley Hendricks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Buffs' No. 2 pairing of Destinee Reynoso and Elania Nambo started off their match strong, winning the first set 7-5 over Savana Caldentery and Kailei Oulette, but the Mountain View duo regrouped and won the following two sets 6-3, 6-4.
The Lady Buffs now get a week off for spring break, and will return to action Tuesday, April 3, with a home meeting against Sisters.
MHS boys blanked on the road
Facing a strong 5A Mountain View team on the road last Thursday, Madras boys came up empty and suffered its second loss of the season.
But the end score could've easily been different if not for a couple close matches that the Buffs narrowly lost.
The No. 4 singles match between Madras' Jose Piceno and Mountain View's Gabe Kolosziejczyk turned into a marathon match. Piceno took the first set 6-4, before Kolosziejczyk took set two 6-4. In the third, the two battled into double digit games, but Kolosziejczyk ultimately won the set 14-12 and the match.
On the doubles court, No. 1 pairing Esteban Gomez and Tony Giron battled Hans Bunyi and Ben Wenndorf to a close second set, but the Mountain View duo ultimately won 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Mountain View won the six other varsity matches in straight sets.
The Buffs will play at Sisters April 3.
