Madras baseball won their league opener Friday, April 6, thanks to a three-run triple hit by Tyler Lockey.

Things started off slowly for both the White Buffalos and the Indians. The first run was not scored until the bottom of the third inning.

Freshman Nathan Stout started a rally for the Buffs with a base hit to shallow center. Kody Zemke hit Stout to second with a ground ball past shortstop.

Cameron Rodriguez was walked to load the bases for sophomore Liam White. White hit a ground ball up the first-base line to score both Stout and Zemke, giving Madras a 2-0 lead at the end of the third.

Molalla responded with a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning. Dylan Wynn hit home teammate Damian Pingo with a ground ball between short and third for the Indians to score their first run of the game.

The Indians scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to a hit to deep right field by Braden Hibbs scoring one. The other run was due to a White Buffalo error.

Molalla took a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Buffs were up by one with two outs, full count, and bases loaded for senior leader Tyler Lockey. Lockey decided to take matters into his own hands, hitting a triple to deep right center to score three runs for the Buffs.

"I was just trying to put the ball in play," said Lockey. "I went up there with a lot of confidence."

Madras scored five runs in the fifth inning to put the Buffs up 7-3.

After Lockey took over offensively, he decided to take over the game on the mound.

Lockey struck out four of the next six Molalla batters to close out the game and secure a White Buffalo victory.

"Every practice we have had we are trying to make it seem like a game, we are going hard, so by the time the game comes we are full of confidence," said Lockey.

Madras White Buffalo baseball plays Wednesday, April 11, at home against Estacada at 4:30 p.m. They also play in Estacada Friday, April 14 and Monday, April 16, in Gladstone. Both games are at 4:30 p.m.
