Two local shops move locations looking to expand their businesses

The storefront at 718 E. First St. will be unrecognizable for a while as one store moves out and another moves in.

Janis Jewelry and Gifts used to occupy the space but recently finished moving to a larger space one block away at 616 E. First St.

“It’s a lot bigger with way better frontage in that it’s all windows,” said owner Janis Schroeder. by: GARY ALLEN - A moving experience - Janis Schroeder, owner of Janis Jewelry and Gifts, has more open space to display her merchandise at the new 616 E. First St. location, Velour will take over the old Janis Jewelry location at 718 E. First St.

Schroeder said she moved because she needed a larger space and she wasn’t getting a lot of traffic at her location down the street.

“We’ve had a lot of people in the past two weeks since we moved who didn’t know we were here,” she said. “I’ve been there for four and a half years.”

In the 10 days since she’s moved, she said customers have been commenting on the new inventory.

“It’s the same stuff, you just couldn’t see it before,” she said of the limited space in the old location.

Velour, the store taking over the 718 E. First St. location, is following the theme of expansion with its move.

“(Janis’) space was two spaces, actually, so we are going to be renting one of those spaces,” said Andrew Brittell, one of four Velour owners. “We just needed some elbow room. We love where we are, but it’s a little too small.”

Currently Velour is at 109 N. Blaine St., where the shop will stay until late October when Brittell said they hope to finish moving.

“There’s a lot we want to do with the space, so we will be keeping the shop open until the move,” he said.

He said they hope to be open for the Nov. 1 First Friday Art Walk event.
