First Street business — After 22 years, owners look to spend more time with family, move on from operating bike shop

by: GARY ALLEN - End of an era -- After 22 years in business, Newberg Bike Shop owner David Herr and his wife Cheri are closing the shop's doors in order to spend more time with family. It’s been more than 22 years since David and Cheri Herr opened Newberg Bike Shop, but they’ve decided it’s time to close the doors.

“We tried to sell the business but didn’t have any takers for it, so we’re just liquidating everything and hopefully somebody else will decide to jump back into it before too long,” David Herr said.

He said the cause wasn’t for lack of business.

“I’m going to retire. I’m old,” he said.

Cheri Herr added that with closing they hope to improve their quality of life.

“We work here six days a week and we haven’t had a vacation in eight years. We went to see David’s parents in Arkansas for Christmas and that’s the first time either of us has been on an airplane in eight years,” she said. “We have 10-year-old boys that have never been camping and we can barely find time to go for a bike ride with them.”

So while her husband retires, Cheri said she will be happy to work just five days a week elsewhere.

As for the store, David Herr said they have to be out of the 500 E. First St. location at the end of the month, but they may not be open that long.

“I don’t think it’ll take that long,” he said. “Everybody’s saying, ‘What’s your last day?’ Well, we don’t know. If (bikes) run out, that will be the last day.”

On Jan. 8, the store looked fairly bare. A few adult bikes remained on the back wall, a few children’s in the center and a few bikes remained that as yet had not been built.

“We’re very thankful to the community of Newberg for the 22 years we’ve had,” Cheri Herr said. “We’ve had customers that bought their first bike here and brought their kids in for their first bike. We’ve also had customers who we’ve sold their last bike, older customers. It’s been fun to be a part of the community and we’re very thankful to Newberg for their support.”

While inventory remains, Newberg Bike Shop will be open normal hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
