New business — Popular coffee franchise seeks to give back locally, internationally

The vacant space adjacent to the Key Bank parking lot on Villa Road is slowly being transformed into a Human Bean — a growingly popular coffee drive-thru company.

Jackie McGrath, Human Bean marketing director, said they’ve been looking to expand to Newberg for a while.

“We’ve been looking at properties for a couple of years now,” McGrath said. “It’s definitely somewhere they thought was good.”

The franchise may seem like just another coffee spot, but McGrath said there’s something that makes them different from all others.

by: GARY ALLEN - Under construction -- A new branch of the Human Bean drive-thru espresso chain will open in the spring. Construction has begun in the Key Bank parking lot on Portland and Villa roads.“Something that makes us different from other coffee companies is our coffee sourcing program, Farm Friendly Direct,” she said. “We actually go to the farmers who grow the coffee and negotiate a price. We pay at or above market price.”

But that’s not all they do. McGrath said they also look to do something for the farmer’s community.

“Say we’re in Africa, we might build a water system if they don’t have one, or pay teachers,” she said.

That community support applies locally as well.

“We do different events throughout the year. In October we have a breast cancer donation day,” she said. “We donate all the funds from drink sales we make that day locally to the local hospital for mammograms for the uninsured or under-insured women, or for check-ups, whatever the need is in the community.”

She said they try to do different similar events throughout the year.

“We try to be a positive part of each community,” she said.

The new location is expected to open in April.
