Legislature — Keizer native Barbara Jensen announces candidacy Feb. 11, seeking to fill state Rep. Kim Thatchers position; joins two other candidates

A third candidate has joined the race for Oregon House District 25, serving Newberg, St. Paul, Keizer and rural northern Marion County. Barbara Jensen, of Keizer, announced Feb. 11 that she will seek the position currently held by Kim Thatcher.

Jensen joins Newberg City Councilor Ryan Howard and conservative talk show host Bill Post in the race. Thatcher announced in January that she would seek the Senate District 13 position being vacated by Larry George.

“My roots are here. I was born in Salem, raised in Keizer, I raised a son in Keizer and I’ve got a small business,” Jensen said. “We’ve got some real problems in government and we need some problem solvers to solve them. I feel I can do that.”Jensen

Jensen graduated from Linfield College with a degree in business management and has worked for more than 30 years in IT compliance, business consulting and government accountability and efficiency.

“I think that provides the passion for attaching and understanding what is happening and the messages that are given to the Legislature,” she said. “I think my business background combined with that I can ask the right questions and expect appropriate answers or dig deeper (makes for an ideal candidate).”

For Jensen, there are a few main issues she hopes to work on.

“Jobs and the economy,” she said. “I think we need to grow jobs and protect small businesses.”

She said education is another important factor.

“I think we need to look at options for well-rounded environment,” Jensen said. “Other states are evaluating what their options are and I think we’re losing track. I want to dig in and … choose the best avenue.”

Overall, she said it’s her background that will “help us get on a better track.”

“Again, I know the questions to ask, I’ve managed projects on time, in scope and on budget for more than 30 years,” Jensen said. “It’s holding that contractor accountable, the timeline accountable and bringing everybody into a scheduled course so that they can make that happen together.”

Jensen is currently the Oregon Representative for the Spirit of ’45 movement and working on a nationwide flyover to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2015.

“It’s just part of my heart,” she said.
