City manager search nearing completion
Government Fifty-eight candidates whittled down to five finalists for Newbergs top official; next step is in-person interviews
The 58 candidates for the Newberg city manager have been narrowed down to five and are now in the background check process.
Nancy Boyer of Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments is facilitating the search to fill the position vacated by city manager Dan Danicic last summer after he resigned amid revelations that he had an affair with a subordinate. Assistant city manager Lee Elliott took over in the interim.
In April, the council should be finalizing those candidates that they want to invite for in-person interviews, Boyer said. Theyre looking at having those open sometime toward the end of April.
But the in-person interviews may not include all five finalists, she said, reasoning that may depend on the results of the background and reference checks.
They could want to include all five people or perhaps they see some distancing between the candidates and would want to narrow it down, Boyer said.
Regardless, she said the decision should be fairly quick after the in-person interviews, keeping the schedule on track for an April selection.
But its hard to completely have a crystal ball, she said, adding that, ideally, the council will see a top candidate and move forward in the process and negotiate a contract.
Other options could be that they are still looking at two candidates and want to do some additional follow up, Boyer said. The worst case scenario is they dont find someone who fully meets their criteria, as a result of that then they would need to decide to look further at another candidates or determine how to move forward.
As for the finalists themselves, Boyer said she couldnt provide any information about them, other than they all have Northwest backgrounds and experience.
