A fire broke out at SP Newsprint May 5 on a machine used in the paper-making process.

“The fire was a result of friction what was created as the winding equipment was being shut down,” said Scott Wagener, SP Newberg general manager. The winder is used to convert large parent reels of paper to individual rolls for newsprint customers, he added.

Newberg and Dundee’s fire departments responded to the one-alarm fire, although Wagener said that was more procedural than necessary.

“Mill personnel extinguished the fire and the fire department was here more as a precaution,” he said. “There was minimal damage and there were no injuries.”

Fires typically occur at the mill two or three times a year, although more typically in the summer in the mill’s de-inking facility.
