Media — Nico Hamacher of Newberg, a student at Catlin Gabel School, will take on a variety of duties

High school student Nico Hamacher has begun work at The Newberg Graphic as a summer intern.

“I look forward to contributing to and learning from the staff members at The Graphic,” he said. “I hope to be a journalist and I couldn’t imagine a better place to start learning journalism skills.”

Now a rural Newberg resident, Hamacher grew up outside of Gaston.Hamacher

He will be a senior at the Catlin Gabel School in Beaverton. Hamacher is a writer for the school’s daily newspaper CatlinSpeak and was an editor during the 2013-2014 school year. As a member of the CatlinSpeak staff he has written on school and regional issues and helped organize and host a Portland mayoral debate.

In his spare time he is a student leader in the youth climbing and mountaineering group, Explorer POST 58, and helps lead trips through his school’s outdoor program.

In addition to outdoor pursuits Hamacher also plays soccer and enjoys photography and spending time with his younger sister and twin brothers.

“We are excited to have Nico work with us for the summer,” Gary Allen, Graphic managing editor, said, adding that he will be assigning the youth a variety of stories, ranging from features to government and harder news stories. “He is a bright young man and has already demonstrated a real talent for journalism. I expect he will go far.”
