Wyden will hold one of eight town halls in Newberg
Oregon's senior senator will hold eight town halls across the state in early July, including one in Newberg.
Democrat Ron Wyden, serving in the Senate since 1996, will travel to Oregon during Congress' annual Fourth of July recess.
"The Fourth of July is an important reminder of how the Founding Fathers wanted a representative democracy where citizens have every opportunity to talk with elected officials," Wyden said in a prepared statement. "It's clear from the incredible turnout at my 46 town halls so far in 2017 throughout Oregon that people want to participate in our democracy and express their views on issues such as healthcare."
The 68-year-old Kansas native is ranking member of the powerful Senate Finance Committee and served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 15 years before being elected to the Senate. Wyden got his start in politics as founder of the Oregon chapter of the Gray Panthers in 1974. He also served as director of the Oregon legal Services Center for Elderly, a nonprofit legal service that called on his law degree from the University of Oregon in 1974.
The town hall in Yamhill County, set for 3:30 p.m. July 8 in the auditorium at Newberg High School, will be the second of the year in the county of the 54 town halls Wyden has held overall so far in 2017. Early in his tenure as senator Wyden made a commitment to hold annual town halls in each of the state's 36 counties; he has held more than 830 so far.
