Momijis sushi restaurant is now open for business
Momijis Restaurant has paved, stripped the parking lot, installed a new drive-through system, renovated the interior of the former Frack Burger building and has opened its doors for customers to stop by and eat either traditional or non-traditional sushi.
Momijis has four other locations in Oregon and is owned by the same family.
Its menu offers a variety of sushi and a large selection of appetizers, salads, sashimi combos, mini rolls, nigari, classic rolls and a lunch combo, as well as specialty rolls and tempura rolls. They also offer vegetable rolls, premium rolls, bentos, entrees and desserts. The average cost for a meal is around $10.
One can get a bit confused with so many choices but the menu clearly explains what ingredients are in each roll to help customers make a decision. They offer gluten free and vegetarian rolls for an extra dollar and serve both a lunch special and happy hour.
The restaurant is designed with booths along the newly-installed windows and wooden tables and chairs placed in the center. Diners wishing to enjoy watching the cooks at work can sit at the sushi bar.
"It took us five months to remodel this building," said John Zen, a consultant manager for the chain of restaurants. "We had to remove layer after layer to clean it up from the previous owners. We want everything nice and clean and new. There are still a few things we need to touch up and finish. Lighting in the parking lot, a sign for the drive-through and replace some cracked tiles."
The restaurant is in the process of training the servers to become familiar with the menu, but the cooks were trained in another restaurant prior to coming to Newberg.
"We are having a soft opening right now to get things right, but our grand opening will be on Feb. 1," Zen said.
Mia Zen is the owner of the restaurant: "It's a family chain. I want to spend more time with my children and make sure that they can get a good education, so that is why I started this. Right now, it's a lot of work, but I love it! Our first store was in Lincoln City, then we moved on to McMinnville and Newport."
The restaurants are embracing technology to get the word out about their food.
"Soon we will have a mobile app that you can place an order and then just come in to pick up your food or pick it up at the drive-through. We also make deliveries through Hometown Express," said John Zen. Hometown Express is a local delivery service in Newberg.
Momijis is located at 1915 Portland Road and you can call them at 503-487-6493.
