The annual rite of summer begins Thursday with kids parade and queens coronation

The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival is four days of nearly nonstop fun and if you’ve never experienced Newberg’s annual party, you’re in for a treat.

The fun begins Thursday with the kids parade, which starts on Sixth Street and winds by Memorial Park and through the neighborhood. Kids, transported by myriad modes, will be adorned in everything from superhero costumes to Barbie outfits and cowboy gear.

Soon after the parade comes the dog costume contest on the tennis courts at Renne Field. This is great fun as Fido and Fifi’s owners adorn their canine friends in oftentimes hilarious outfits.

Thursday’s events will culminate with the queen’s coronation in Memorial Park. The annual rite sees one of three princesses chosen as the queen who will reign over the festival and represent Newberg in events throughout the area.

Also being unveiled Thursday is the midway area at the park, which features great food, interesting art and a plethora of other attractions. Walk a few blocks south and you’ll find the popular carnival area, replete with rides that will shake your fillings and test your stomach. The midway continues through Sunday, while the carnival will close up shop after the fireworks show Saturday evening at Renne Field. And what a show it is, possibly the best fireworks display in the area.

Of course, the main attraction of the festival, at least for many in the younger set, is the parade Saturday morning in south Newberg. Floats of all imaginable shapes and sizes will be augmented by marching bands, dancers, clowns, mounted performers and more. Don’t miss it — it’s as colorful as Newberg gets.

We’d advise everyone to get out and enjoy the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival. You won’t be disappointed.
