Food-eating contest wasteful, unhealthy

(Editor’s note: This letter was originally sent to the subject of a Newberg Graphic story)

Dear Mr. Berg,

Eating contests encourage overeating and overeating is a primary cause of obesity. Given the epidemic of obesity in Oregon and the United States, we respectfully encourage you to restructure your contest. One possible idea is a food collection contest. The winner might be whoever collects and deposits a predetermined amount of food in a predetermined amount of time into Dundee’s Food Pantry. A scavenger hunt for food for the pantry might be another idea.

We’re sure that Dundee Food Pantry personnel can offer other ideas. Their phone is 503-554-9070.

As volunteers at Newberg F.I.S.H., we know that the number of hungry families in Newberg continues to grow. And the same is true for Dundee. The 12 pounds of food consumed by this year’s two participants could have fed 24 hungry folk in Dundee.
