Philanthropy — The charitable network in Newberg looking to fill two-person slots on seven different nights of the monthly schedule

Helping Newberg’s growing homeless population is one the main priorities of Love INC (In the Name of Christ), which is why finding hosts for the Newberg Community Shelter for women and children is one of their top needs in September.

The shelter currently has openings on the second and fifth Monday of each month, the third Tuesday, fourth Sunday and Friday, as well as the fifth Wednesday and Friday.

The shelter requires a husband and wife or two women to cover any night, with a private bedroom and bathroom provided on the main floor. Shelter guests stay upstairs and sleep in bunk beds. Once-a-month cleaning volunteers are also being called for at the shelter.

“I think that’s probably why we volunteer, because God has blessed us, but in return, expecting nothing back, God blesses us all,” shelter host Clyde Zahn said. “His words work through us.”

Love INC also listed mentors and delivery drivers as top priorities this month, while its various ministries are also looking for specific donations.

The kitchen set-up ministry at 2nd Street Community Church is requesting donations of pots and pans, silverware and new toasters.

I think that’s probably why we volunteer, because God has blessed us, but in return, expecting nothing back, God blesses us all.

The Church of Nazarene’s over-the-counter meds ministry is in need of adult- and children-sized ibuprofen, regular or extra-strength Tylenol, Immodium, Neosporin, acid reducers and vitamins for both children and adults.

The St. Peter Linens Closet is calling for queen- and twin-size fitted sheets, hand towels and bath mats.

In its latest partnership with local schools, Love INC is holding a peanut butter drive. To supplement food for the families of students that would otherwise do without, Love INC is packing food bags with bread, peanut butter and jelly that can be taken home by students each Friday.

Donations can be dropped off at Love INC, Newberg Christian Church or First United Methodist Church.
