Auxiliary will host Hubbell talk

The George Fox Auxiliary will host Barry Hubbell from noon to 1:30 p.m. May 9 in the Cap and Gown Room on the Newberg campus.

Hubbell, who worked for the university for 37 years in a number of roles — including as director of information, director of university relations, sports information director and executive assistant to the president — will present “Reflections on the 1980s-1990s: The Ed Stevens Presidency” as part of the auxiliary’s series, “Reflections on Pacific College/GFC/GFU History.” The cost to attend the event is $8.50 per person and reservations are due by May 8 by calling Judy Woolsey at 503-538-7314 or emailing her at This email address is being protected from spambots. Walkers needed for mental health fundraiser

The Yamhill County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a three-mile walk to raise funds to assist those with brain disorders.

The walk is slated for 1 p.m. May 18 in Portland. According to NAMI research, one in four people will be affected by some type of brain disorder or mental health issue in their lifetime.

Newberg-Dundee Police Department slates open house

The Newberg-Dundee Police Department will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at the Public Safety Building, Third and South Howard streets.

The event will feature police cars, motorcycles and bikes; a mugshot photo booth; recruitment information for reserve officers; crime prevention information; a tour of the dispatch center; an evidence station for kids; hot dogs and chips; safety information and a chance to visit with the Old Fashioned Festival princesses.

There will also be tours of the police station, a chance to meet with officers, K-9 demonstrations and a chance to win a ride in a police car.

Northwest Senior & Disability Services slates fundraiser

The organizers of the nutrition program at Northwest Senior & Disability Services, which provides Meals on Wheels and senior meals in the Newberg area, will hold a fundraiser for those programs May 11.

Volunteers are needed for dining room and kitchen chores, such as serving meals, setting tables and providing other services at the meal site, as well as volunteer drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors.

Community Conversation for homelessness on May 15

McMINNVILLE — A town hall meeting to discuss ways of improving the care of the homeless in Yamhill County through the COMPASS (Community Outreach of McMinnville Positive Action Sharing Sanctuary) Center will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 15 at the Duniway Middle School A-gym, 575 Michelbrook Lane.

There will be a discussion panel and a guest speaker, Richard LeMieux, author of “Breakfast at Sally’s.”

Photo contest for Oregon Blue Book open

The contest for the 2015 Oregon Blue Book cover photo is now open. The book is the official state almanac and is published biennially, but Yamhill and 19 of Oregon’s other 36 counties have never been on the cover.

After-school science program coming in May

The third session of the Meet Me in the Lab program at Edwards Elementary, a part of the Chehalem Park and Recreation District’s Mad Science After School Enrichment Program, will held from 3:40 to 4:40 p.m. Thursdays through June 5. The program is for students ages 5 to 12 and cost is $101.

Newberg Animal Shelter Friends annual mega sale May 16-17, venue changed to Dundee

Newberg Animal Shelter Friends will host its annual mega sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16-17 at the Dundee Women’s Hall. The sale was originally to be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg, but that venue is no longer available.

The group is taking donations May 15 at the women’s hall or arrangements may be made for pickup by calling Barbara Lipinski at 503-538-2449.

All of the proceeds from the sale will go toward finishing the shelter and purchasing necessary equipment for its operations. For more information, call 503-538-2449.
