Safety Town set for August, community band will perform, support group meets monthly, rural fire board will gather

Safety Town coming Aug. 7-11

The Chehalem Park and Recreation District and the Newberg-Dundee Police Department will partner to host the five-day Safety Town camp for children entering kindergarten or first grade Aug. 7-11 at the Chehalem Armory Center, 620 N. Morton. The camp will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and includes presentations and activities about personal, bicycle, pedestrian, fire, water, animal, electrical and school bus safety, as well as poison awareness and calling 9-1-1. Cost is $60 for district residents ($70 for out of district) with a $10 discount for registering early. Community band slates concerts

Newberg's Community Band will hold two concerts over the next month. The band is first slated to play from 1 to 2 p.m. July 30 in Memorial Park as part of the Old Fashioned Festival. On Aug. 3 the band will play in the amphitheater at George Fox University at 7 p.m. The amphitheater is east of the football stadium off Fulton Street. Parkinson's support group meets each month

Rural fire board will meet

The board of directors for the Newberg Rural Fire Protection District will meet at 5:30 p.m. July 18 at the downtown fire station, Second and South Howard streets. The agenda for the meeting includes swearing in new board members, electing board officers, considering a resolution on Newberg's public vote on annexation into the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue district, hearing an incident report from TVFR and distributing the 2017-2018 budget documents. Chamber, city building vacant business property database

The Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce is calling for Newberg business property owners to report any vacant industrial or commercial spaces they have in the city. The chamber is working with city staff to compile a database of such properties and is asking for details that include the location and size of the space and contact information for possible referrals, according to an announcement from the chamber. Pinochle tourney on tap at senior center

The Chehalem Senior Center, 101 W. Foothills Drive, will hold a pinochle tournament from 1 to 4 p.m. July 14. The entry fee is $5 and cash prizes will be awarded. For more information or to make reservations, call 503-537-9404.
