Running — Wendy and Ayla Roberts train for a half marathon and raising money for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America

You never know what will inspire you to step up and help someone else.

For Newberg resident Wendy Roberts and daughter Ayla all it took was a small coincidence.

Last month, a letter from the Crohn’s and Colitis Team Challenge, a training program and fundraiser for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), arrived in the mail.

When they opened it, staring back at them was the picture of a little girl who suffered from the debilitating diseases. Her name just happened to be Ayla, too.

That was enough for the mother-daughter duo to sign up with Team Challenge and now the pair is training to run a half marathon and raising money for the CCFA at the same time.

With good reason, the Roberts have an set ambitious fundraising goal of $11,800, because if they hit that mark they will have their airfare and accommodations provided for in order to participate in a half marathon in Kona, Hawai’i.

The two have been training with a Team Challenge trainer and group weekly in Portland, in addition to running on their own time during the week.

“It’s going really well,” Wendy Roberts said. “We’re both up to five miles right now at a pretty decent pace.”
