Eichten earns third straight trip to state

CRESWELL — Newberg’s Tori Eichten didn’t play her best golf of the season at the Pacific Conference district tournament May 12-13 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, but her matching rounds of 87 were good enough for fifth place and a ticket to the state tournament Monday and Tuesday. by: SUBMITTED - Eichten headed to state - Newberg girls head golf coach Mike Weston, Kendelyn Thomas and Tori Eichten (right) gather at the Pacific Conference district tournament May 13. The Tigers did not post a team score, but Eichten placed fifth to earn a bid to the 6A state tournament and Thomas placed 23rd.

“I felt like a played pretty well,” Eichten said. “I had some holes that just weren’t all that great, but overall I hit the ball pretty well.”

Eichten qualified for her third consecutive state tournament, shooting a disappointing 92 in her opening round at Emerald Valley Golf Course.

“The scores were a little bit high (Monday) for everybody,” coach Mike Weston said. “The greens were pretty tough, with a lot of three and four putts.”

Despite the rough outing, Eichten knows better than to get rattled for her second round Tuesday (results unavailable at press time).

“I didn’t play all that well (Monday), but it’s just fun to be out here,” Eichten said. “I’m not all that concerned with my score.”
