Tigers break through against the Pacers
The Newberg baseball team's two-game series versus West Linn last week was unfortunately similar to the rest of the team's season so far, as the 10-2 and 11-0 results were par for the course amid 11 straight losses to open the 2018 campaign.
The Tigers did put and end to that skid, however, with a 5-2 home win over Lakeridge on Monday.
Cameron LaRoche set the tone with a complete-game performance on the mound, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Derek Maiben powered the offense, for the most part, by going three-for-four and scoring two runs. Kyle Kruse doubled home a pair of runs.
The Tigers (1-11, 1-2 Three Rivers League) travel to Lakeridge Wednesday and will host Lake Oswego Friday.
Kennedy 10, St. Paul 5 – The Trojans pounded out 14 hits to seven for St. Paul, as the top two teams in the Tri-River Conference faced off Monday afternoon in St. Paul. No. 2 Kennedy (9-1, 3-0 TRC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the No. 6 Bucks (6-1, 2-1) put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the fifth to make it 6-5. The Trojans put the game away with two runs in each of the next two innings.
Newberg 18, Marist 3 – Jezzie Fair and Hannah Hutchette posted five goals apiece in the blowout win for Newberg (3-4) at home Saturday.
Newberg 4, Southridge 4 –The Tigers won 10-8 on sets April 3 after sweeping in doubles. Sarah Dixon and Gabi Severson lost their matches, at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, in three sets to provide the difference for Newberg, whereas Newberg won all four of its doubles matches in straight sets.
