GFU launches new Masters of Social Work program
Although the program doesnt officially begin until fall 2015, George Fox University will begin accepting applications for its new Master of Social Work (MSW) course of study in October.
Prospective students will have until March 2015 to submit their applications at www. georgefox.edu/social-work. If successful they will become part of what the school is billing as one of only three such programs in the state.
The MSW is a two-year program requiring 60 credit-hours of study. However, those students possessing a bachelors degree in social work from GFU or another accredited school can apply for admission to the MSW Advanced Standing program at Fox, which allows full-time students to complete the MSW in 10 months.
The MSW is designed, according to school officials, to build on GFUs undergrad program.
An important piece of our mission is that our students serve with passion and this degree aligns with that mission, said Cliff Rosenbohm, director of the schools School of Social Work. We stress the integration of Christian faith and the highest standards of social work scholarship and professional practice, with the goal of training leaders to be professionally prepared and globally engaged.
The first year of study is designed to prepare students for general social work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Year two prepares grades for advanced social work in one or two concentrations: direct practice with families, children, individuals and groups; and community practice with an emphasis on organizations, community empowerment and program development.
The program will include internships at social work agencies and programs designed to match students choice of concentration and their personal interests. The interns will be under the director of supervisors with social work degrees from accredited programs.
The demands of the program are strenuous: To earn a MSW degree, students will undergo a minimum of 900 hours of supervised internship.
Classes will be held at the universitys Portland Center in Tigard. For more information, visit www.georgefox.edu/social-work or call 503-554-6097.
