Herbert K. Beals

Beals, who passed on November 2nd at the age of 79 at his home in Gladstone, was a native Oregonian; his parents owned a neighborhood corner market in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood in his youth, and he grew up in the upper story of the market, delivering groceries from the market to nearby residents. He attended Reed College 1951-53, and attained his Masters degree in History from Portland State University. He was a member of the Oregon Historical Society, and was considered one of Oregon’s most notable historians. His honors and awards include the John Lyman Award in 1990 from the North American Society for Oceanic History for his book “Juan Perez on the Northwest Coast: Six Documents of His Expedition in 1774”, and his listing in Who’s Who in the World, 2004-09, Who’s Who in American, 2002-07; and Who’s Who in the West, 1980-81. He published three editions of “Gladstone History”. Beals is survived by his wife Barbara, by his daughters Patricia (Olen) Laughlin and Cherie (Kevin) Tomlin, by his son Steven (and wife Amanda Schmidt), “sister” Georgia Brent, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A memorial service was held at Atkinson Memorial church in Oregon City on November 7.
