Tigard softball team gets victory to finish up league

DAN BROOD - The Tigard softball team celebrates following a game earlier this season.TIGARD — The Tigard High School softball team made its final Three Rivers League game of the season a successful one.

The Tigers wrapped up league play by running to an 8-1 win over Sherwood in a TRL contest played Friday at Tigard High School.

With the victory, the Tigers finished up TRL play with a 12-2 record (19-5 overall), putting them in second place in the final league standings.

The Tigers, who are at the No. 18 spot in the final OSAA power rankings, will open the Class 6A state playoffs on Monday, when they travel to Grants Pass for a first-round match-up. Grants Pass, the No. 3 team out of the Southwest Conference, and the No. 15 in the power rankings, is 17-8 on the season.

Tigard, as a team, pounded out 12 hits in the win over Sherwood. Freshman Abby Soderquist went 2 for 2 at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore Sarah Moss went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs. Freshman Emily Paulson blasted a home run and drove in two runs. Junior Caroline Riggs also had a pair of RBIs.

Junior Ashley Davis picked up the pitching win. She gave up one run on five hits, while striking out 10 and walking none in seven innings of work. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate.

The Tigers will host Grant today in a non-league game, starting at 5 p.m., at Tigard High School.

Tigard, if it wins at Grants Pass on Monday, will play in the second round of the state playoffs on Wednesday. The Tigers would either play at Jesuit, of host a yet-to-be determined opponent.
