Four signs it's time to replace your water heater

Water heaters are one of the great conveniences of modern life, providing running hot water on tap. And if you're like most people, you have no idea when your water heater is about to fail. A cold night in January after your water heater falters is not the best time to learn you need a replacement water heater, so look for these four signs before it's too late:
1.) Is your water heater old?—The average lifespan of a water heater is 8-12 years. Anything over ten years should be seriously considered for replacement before a leak develops that can damage your home.
2.) Noisy water heater—A popping or banging noise could indicate a buildup of mineral deposits in the tank, leading the tank to overheat and eventually leak.
3.) Leaking tank or connections—Rusty or leaking connections are an obvious sign of trouble that requires your immediate attention. A leaking water heater can flood your entire home if not replaced immediately.
4.) Insufficient hot water—The most common sign of a failing water heater, as mineral deposits build up, less and less heat reaches the water, diminishing your hot water supply. Eventually, the constant heating of the tank will cause your water heater to fail and begin to leak.
