Benefit raises scholarship funds for Portland Youth Philharmonic hopefuls

To honor former Kinnaman Elementary School teacher Victor Frederick Walton, the Portland Youth Philharmonic and Joy’s Uptown Style is hosting the Fall Fashion Show, “Beauty of Music,” on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Portland Multnomah Athletic Club.

The event, which begins at 5:45 p.m., will include dinner, silent and live auctions and performances by Portland Youth Philharmonic musicians. All proceeds from the event will go to the PYP Victor Frederick Walton Memorial Scholarship.

Walton, a former music teacher and bassoonist with PYP, died in May 2011, from Lou Gehrig’s disease. During his life, he was relentless in his efforts to connect every interested student with a musical instrument. His dream was to be able to help students who could not afford an instrument, private lessons, or tuition in a youth music program such as the Portland Youth Philharmonic because he knew first-hand how PYP had changed his life. As a music educator, he often told others that he had not had a great interest in school — until he was encouraged to audition for PYP as a young bassoonist in 1977. He was accepted and continued to play with the group until his 21st birthday.

PYP Board past president Jan John, whose son Joshua took lessons from Walton for six years, said, “There is no question that Victor would be thrilled to know that a scholarship program has been created in his name that will allow other students the opportunity to play in PYP by providing financial aid or funding private lessons from qualified music teachers.”

As a tribute to his beloved teacher, Joshua John, a 2008 graduate of Beaverton High School who is following in his mentor’s footsteps and completing his master’s degree in music performance on bassoon at the University of Minnesota, will be performing at the fundraising event.

“The support from local Beaverton stores and restaurants has been terrific,” Jan John said. “Many have contributed gift certificates that will be included in the silent auction.”
