16th century, Hillsboro style

The Oregon Renaissance Festival has entertained spectators at Washington County Fair Complex and continues through Sept. 21.

On opening day, Aug. 16, spectators packed the main bleacher section, sending stragglers into the end zone, as knights battled with swords and lances at the jousting tournament (above, lower right).

At the live chess board, a new feature this year, a pawn took on a knight during a game (right). Another new element: A mysterious musician played a carillon of giant bells (lower left). The popular Washer-Women show returned, along with many other features from last year, including the hand-powered swing ride that thrills as much as a Tilt-A-Whirl.

Parking is free this year. Entry is free for children 4 and under, $7.95 for children 5 to 12 and $15.95 for age 13 and older. For more information, go to http://www.oregonrenfest.com.
