MORE STORIES

Here are some notes on this and that and the other thing - including Portugal. The Man and 'Trans-formation'

Don Horn, executive director of Triangle Productions, sent an email to supporters and media this week, stating that he continues to get pushback from the LGBTQ community about not casting a woman or a transgender person as the lead role in the play "Trans-formation," about the first recognized fully transgender person in the United States, the late Christine Jorgensen (formerly George Jorgensen).

He's keeping young male actor Matthew Sunderland in the lead role for the play, Feb. 1-24. Horn says he previously consulted folks in the LGBTQ community and had open casting calls. Much of the play is about George, so casting a male made sense.

"The show will go on with or without support from the (LGBTQ) organizations, so this historical piece can be brought to the stage," Horn writes. "Without (forebears), we would not be where we are today — in a more accepting society."

Big honor

Already owning the longest charting No. 1 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts, Portland band Portugal. The Man has added a big honor to its credits: Grammy Award winner. The band took home the Grammy for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for its big hit, "Feel It Still," during the awards ceremony Sunday, Jan. 28, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Portugal. The Man beat out Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber ("Despacito").

Portugal. The Man calls Portland home, but they hail from Wasilla, Alaska, where band leaders Zach Carothers and John Gourley grew up together.

Gourley tells Billboard that the band is working on new music. The band will start a tour Thursday, Feb. 1, in Eugene.

"We seem to be the most creative the second we finish records, and watching the success of this song just makes me wanna try harder," he says.
