Heath, Sinclair score as Portland tops Western New York Flash

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Portland Thorns claimed the first National Women's Soccer League title Saturday with a 2-0 victory over the Western New York Flash.

Tobin Heath's winning goal came on a solid free kick in the 40th minute, and Christine Sinclair added a goal during second-half stoppage time.

Alex Morgan, a 71st-minute substitute for Danielle Foxhoven, assisted on Sinclair's score.

Western New York, Portland and FC Kansas City all tied for first place in the regular season with 38 points in 22 games. The Flash got the No. 1 playoff seed on tie-breakers. Western New York and Portland had played twice before, both times to a draw.

The Thorns played with 10 women after the 56th minute, when defender Kat Williamson was sent off for a second yellow card she drew for taking down Flash forward Abby Wambach.
