Winterhawks start strong, hold on vs. Spokane

Nic Petan, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Alex Schoenborn each scored two goals, and the Portland Winterhawks turned a blistering start into a 6-4 home victory Wednesday night over the previously undefeated Spokane Chiefs.

The Hawks scored four goals in the first 8:09 to lead 4-1, then got an empy-net goal from Petan with 18 seconds left in the game to secure their victory before an announced crowd of 4,605 at Moda Center.

Petan opened the scoring at 3:10 of the first period. Spokane equalized 67 seconds later, but Schoenborn put Portland ahead for good at 6:00. Goals by Bjorkstrand and Schoenborn closed out the first-period scoring.

Bjorkstrand's power-play goal, his eighth of the Western Hockey League season, pushed the Winterhawks' lead to 5-2.

The Chiefs got power-play goals at 16:07 and 17:21 to make things interesting and tougher on Portland goaltender Brendan Burke, who finished with 27 saves.

The Hawks improved to 3-1-0-1 (seven points), while Spokane fell to 4-1-0-0 (eight points).
