COLLEGE WATCH: Pilots men beat Idaho to open home hoops tourney; PSU volleyball wins

The Portland Pilots beat Idaho 88-74 Thursday at Chiles Center in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Junior center Thomas van der Mars had 15 points and 12 rebounds for UP, which led by as many as 24 points and by as many as 20 in the first half.

Freshman point guard had 14 points for Portland, and senior forward Ryan Nicholas totaled 12 points and nine rebounds.

Portland improved to 2-2.

Idaho, led by former Jefferson High star Stephen Madison's 19 points, dropped to 2-2.

The Vandals shot 38 percent from the field, while Portland hit 47 percent.

The Pilots return to the court Friday to face Columbia at 7 p.m. Idaho will meet North Texas at 4:30 p.m.

The Saturday tournament games are Idaho-Columbia at 4:30 p.m., and Portland-North Texas at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

At Corvallis, Oregon State ran its record to 4-0 with a 92-54 victory over Loyola Marymount.

The Beavers made a school record 17 3-pointers (their old mark was 12), three shy of the Pac-12 record Oregon set earlier this season versus Cal State Bakersfield and five off the NCAA record.

Guards Jamie Weisner and Sydney Wiese each went 5 of 7 from beyond the arc. Weisner, a sophomore, led all scorers with 17 points. Wiese, a freshman, had 15.

"We have a lot of great shooters," OSU coach Scott Rueck said. "When you have an inside presence like we do, it commands attention."

Alyssa Martin and Ali Gibson each scored 14 points for OSU. Gibson tied the school record with a 3 at the 11:56 mark of the second half, then made one more to give her 101 in her Beavers career.

Loyola Marymount fell to 1-3.

Oregon State travels to Freeport, Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam. OSU opens the tournament against 14th-ranked Penn State on Friday, then will play Florida or Illinois State on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

Portland State won its next-to-last regular season match to remain tied with North Dakota for first place in the Big Sky.

PSU's eighth straight victory came at Weber State 25-14, 25-19 22-25-, 25-15.

PSU outhit Weber .195 to .123 and is undefeated this season when outhitting its opponent.

North Dakota beat Northern Arizona 3-0 ti match the Vikings at 16-3.

PSU can take the top seed into the conference tournament with a win Saturday at Idaho State, because the Viks own the tiebreaker over UND.

The Big Sky tourney is at Stott Center Nov. 29-30.

Senior outside hitter Aubrey Mitchell had 11 kills Thursday for Portland State, hitting .643. Senior outside hitter Jaklyn Wheeler had 10 kills.
