by: COURTESY OF PORTLAND THORNS FC - Paul Riley takes over as head coach of the Portland Thorns FC.Paul Riley is the second coach in the history of the Portland Thorns FC.

Riley replaces Cindy Parlow Cone, who resigned recently after leading the club to the championship season of the National Women's Soccer League.

Riley, 50, was coach of Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer. The Independence played for the WPS title the past two seasons. Riley was WPS coach of the year in 2010 and 2011 and compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons with Philly.

The Liverpool native played 10 years of pro soccer with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

He was a midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85.
