Norm Monroe, a 6-1 sophomore transfer from Clark Junior College, becomes the first black to play basketball for Oregon State College coach Slats Gill.
Monroe enters a game against Arizona State with 8:40 remaining in the first half and scores one point.
The occasion merits one line at the end of the game story in the daily paper.
OSC wins 65-54, with Terry Baker, who had said he would skip the basketball season, making a surprise appearance but looking rusty, as he scores just two points.
